Barriers to HIV/AIDS Care in Rural Communities

Many environmental, economic, and privacy factors converge to cause barriers and challenges that complicate HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention in rural areas. Some overarching factors include poverty in many rural areas, limited resources, and structural barriers that pose challenges to accessing services.

Unique Barriers of Rural Communities

  • Stigma

  • Privacy and lack of anonymity

  • Lack of awareness

  • Lack of services

  • Lack of specialized service providers

30 Years of Community Service

For 30+ Years, NIAC has been providing stigma free services, advancing health care for rural North Idaho, and providing no-cost testing (STD, HIV, HCV) HIV medical case management, and now quitting smoking and peer support groups.
If you find our no-cost services valuable, please help us keep the lights on.

Digital Community Outreach-Health Literacy

  • When organizations share information with people that is too hard to understand, it creates a health literacy problem

  • Health literacy can help us find, understand, and use health information to prevent health problems.

  • Digital communication tools, including mobile health apps, telemedicine and online health information resources, have emerged as powerful platforms for promoting and improving health literacy leading to better health outcomes.

  •  Key points related to health literacy and prevention of health problems include:

    • Making good decisions about health.

    • Getting necessary medical care, including preventative care.

    • Taking medicines correctly.

    • Managing chronic diseases.

    • Leading a healthy lifestyle.
